From Downpatrick to Blacksod

From a residency at the Ballinglen Foundation, County Mayo, Ireland

These stunning, small paintings on paper are a dramatic change from the large, loosely painted oils that precede them. Something very different is going on here and, as in the tradition of the traveler’s journal the secrets sometimes are revealed in retrospect. These paintings record the colors, the changing light, the natural forms and the textures of the countryside. Mostly devoid of people, these luminous paintings include reference to what humans have done with the landscape, the cleared fields, hedgerows, stone walls, roads, buildings: an overlay of formal order like a bridle over a wild and powerful nature.
